Question for
you. Who is the “typical” black voter?
This is a question that has
seemed to both confound and confuse the media and political establishment
throughout much of this presidential campaign. But I have an even better
question: Why? Why do the same reporters, political consultants and candidates
who seem to have no trouble recognizing that Pat Buchanan and Ted Kennedy, two
Irish Catholic Americans, have about as much in common politically speaking as
President Bush and Fidel Castro—seem to have such a tough time recognizing that
the politics of black Americans can, and often are, equally diverse?
